![]() However, breeding short-legged cats to short-legged cats does not produce a "homozygous" version (totally dominant for short legs). The gene for producing short legged cats is dominant. Short legged Minuets are called “standard,” and long legged Minuets are called “nonstandard.” The terminology may seem a little confusing at first, especially with reference to the “Standard” of the breed as discussed above. In the meantime, it is important to create as large a gene pool as possible. Eventually, once there are sufficient numbers and enough time has passed, only Minuet x Minuet breedings will be allowed. The Munchkin Group consists of both long and short-haired Munchkins. The Persian Group consists of all Persians, including Exotic Shorthairs and Himalayans. The following are a few points to keep in mind regarding Minuet breeding in particular:Īt this point in its development, being a hybrid breed with allowable outcrosses to the Persian and Munchkin Groups, there are four ways that a Minuet can be produced: (1) Persian x Munchkin, (2) Persian x Minuet, (3) Munchkin x Minuet, and (4) Minuet x Minuet. Producing quality, healthy Minuets that approach this standard should be the goal of every breeder. The goal of breeding Minuets is to produce cats that conform as closely as possible to the "Standard" as set forth for the Minuet (see our page on Standards). A quality Persian breeder will be happy to discuss these issues with you and to provide proof of any genetic testing necessary to maintain good health and longevity. Also, be sure and use cats that have been DNA tested for any inheritable disorders. Care must be taken to avoid Persian breeding stock with poor tear ducts (runny eyes), tiny nares (nostrils), or malocclusion. The use of high quality Persians is recommended (see Getting There below) and the importance of healthy cats cannot be over emphasized. The "nuts and bolts" of cat breeding are beyond the scope of this web page, but I strongly recommend that anyone who has not bred cats before research this thoroughly, seek out mentors, and learn as much as possible before proceeding cautiously with this difficult yet potentially very rewarding endeavor. " When raising cats properly, there is no great profit to be made, nor does it come easily. "The domestic cat is one of the most difficult animal species to propogate. Niels Pederson, the author of the excellent book Feline Husbandry. I feel that this section must be prefaced with a quote from Dr. ![]() Getting your kitten used to gently being brushed as a youngster turns this into a pleasurable experience for you and your cat! Even with the densest of coats, twice weekly comb outs should be sufficient. We recommend a steel comb to groom your cat as it reaches down to the skin. The long coat with its plumed tail and lovely neck ruff is glorious to behold but will require regular combing and maintenance. The short coat is a plush, dense coat that requires less maintenance. The Minuets (both standard and nonstandard) comes in two coat lengths. Other than leg length, the nonstandard Minuet has the same beauty and personality as its shorter littermates. As the nonstandard Minuets do not carry the gene for short legs, they are frequently available at a lesser price. Minuets come in two leg lengths: Standard (short) and nonstandard (long). Make sure your Minuet comes with registration papers and a record of its shots. If your Minuet is coming from a place too far away to visit, do not hesitate to ask for referrals, even from the breeder’s veterinarian. Breeders who raise their cats in a proper environment should have no problem showing you where and how they house their cats. If you live close enough, you have a right (with proper notice) to visit where your Minuet is coming from. Unfortunately, there are those few whose only interest is making a profit. Most Minuet breeders are deeply committed to the well-being of their animals. Minuets are “dangerous” in that is easy to fall in love with their cuteness, but never let that take away from making rational decisions regarding the addition of a Minuet to your family.Ĭhoose carefully. Never feel pressured into purchasing a kitten or cat. A Minuet can move as quickly as any other cat but they are never a match for dogs, automobiles, or getting lost. We also firmly believe there is never a reason for your Minuet to be outdoors when not restrained by a leash or a secure outdoor enclosure. There are many excellent sources of information on cat care. If you have never owned a cat before, be sure and educate yourself regarding their care and housing requirements.
